Within these records I have found many clues. In these, I have got a phone number and also an address. This led to evidence of an organized crime. All the suspects were investigated thanks to IEF.Kidnapping & Extortion This was a kidnapping and extortion case. We were looking for Hotmail webmail exchanged between the suspect and the victim that would corroborate either party’s statement. IEF was able to find notable chat messages in the virtual memory swap file (pagefile.sys) and help us determine who was telling the truth.Child Pornography I worked a gigatribe P2P investigation in which our target was downloading and sharing child pornography over the Gigatribe network. By using IEFv4, I was able to extract all of his deleted Gigatribe chats and not only bolster my possession/distribution of CP case but I was also able to identify several other users that he had shared CP with that we never knew about.Suicide IEF assisted in the case of a sudden death, in which the analysis was instrumental in ruling out foul play, due to facebook chat fragments which when put together with other evidence showed how the person intended to commit suicide.Missing Person There have been a few cases where IEF has proved valuable. One in particular that springs to mind relates to a missing person. IEF recovered Facebook chat which enabled me to identify: 1. where the missing person was; and 2. who they were with. Case solved.Trademark Infringement The Facebook chat between the seller and buyers told us everything about the business that was taken place. A completely black business about buying fake clothes from China and selling “genuine” clothes.Intellectual Property Theft We had a recent case where the R&D department left and set up a competing business. Before they left they emailed out our client’s confidential data via Gmail and Yahoo! and IEF found it all. This allowed our clients to get an injunction against the new company and for them to cease operations!Child Exploitation IEF has helped me quickly identify forensic artifacts on a computer and quickly turn that into intelligence that lead to other artifacts and quickly resolve child exploitation cases where time is of essence.Drug Trafficking I’ve been able to search out and find Facebook chat that was directly related to the charges and supported the illegal drug trafficking charges against the suspect.Robbery IEF enabled me to show some Facebook chat between two offenders discussing a robbery they had committed and added weight to the case we were building against them.                                                          |
